Kate Beckett: the love of my life?
I should've done this ages ago, but better late than never, right? Updated every so often when things change majorly.

Hi! I'm Deepa, a twenty-two-year-old queer first-gen Indian-American/desi feminist environmentalist geek-nerd-fan, originally from Seattle, WA, USA. I've been generally in fandom since I was thirteen, under different names in different places, but for the past few years I've gone pretty consistently by "fiercynn" in everything I do and on all the sites I frequent: LJ, DW, AO3, delicious, etc. more general info about me! )

Things that I have created:

So I'm only a few days into my internship, but it's already awesome because I'm getting to work on issues that I really care about, particularly immigration and the Latino community in Washington, as well as women's and gender and LGBTQ stuff. Plus, I've been assigned to a lot cooler tasks than some of the other interns because I speak Spanish, which is making me feel pretty good about myself right now.

Also my boss looks a bit like Santiago Cabrera. This has made for very amusing text exchanges with [personal profile] scribe as well as the decision to nickname him Boss!Lancelot, as I will refer to him from now on.

I'm sure everyone in the world knows this already, but it is [livejournal.com profile] summerpornathon time! I've stalked it often before but this is my first time participating, so: GO TEAM WRATH! \o/

I AM HOME OMG.

...actually I got home about two weeks ago, and then managed to go on another short trip that I just returned from yesterday, but who's counting? Well, me, when I attempted to catch up on my flist for the past two and half weeks. There is a reason I avoid fandom like and avoidy thing when I've been away for a while because it took me an hour just to go through and open tabs for all the posts I wanted to comment on or read more thoroughly than just skimming. Still have to work on that second part. *facepalm*

Meanwhile, home is awesome! I loved London, I really did, and I could definitely see myself living there again sometime in the next few years - but having been away from both the US and Seattle specifically for almost a year, I'm so glad to be back. Even if the weather is typically Pacific Northwest Gray. I've also started my internship and my roommate arrives on Sunday, so things are certainly getting busy!

Things I am working on: my Merlin Paperlegends BB, super secret vid project with [personal profile] scribe, [livejournal.com profile] help_pakistan fic for [personal profile] scribe, [livejournal.com profile] help_japan podfics for [personal profile] snottygrrl, and, eventually, more fic other people who bought me in [livejournal.com profile] help_japan. Phew.

Things I have not yet seen but really need to: Doctor Who mid-season finale, X-Men: First Class, ALL OF SPN S6, ack.

Anyway: FLIST HOW ARE YOU?
Woman From MSNBC
Okay flist, ready for a weird request? Here goes:

Is anyone familiar with both Glee and Enid Blyton-style 1950s British girls' boarding school novels (like the Malory Towers and St. Clare's series)?

Because I, uh, may or may not be considering writing a fusion of the two. Yeah, yeah, I never expected to want to write Glee fic, but I like this idea too much to prompt it off for someone else. Also I don't know if there is anyone else who even knows both, hence this post because I totally need help with it.

...thoughts?

In other news, I am currently doing an entire re-watch of Supernatural to try to get myself back into this show. The problem? It's breaking my heart ALL OVER AGAIN. And I'm only halfway through Season 1 at the moment. *facepalm*
Kate Beckett: the love of my life?
Skype-watched the Castle season finale with [livejournal.com profile] slylilgoblin last night, spoilers are not very incoherent )

Also, I have finally figured out what I'm going to be up to this summer - I have an internship back home - but even more exciting is the fact that My Roommate (my college roommate, one of my best friends) also has an internship in Seattle and will be living with me and my family for two months! Which is fantastic in all sorts of ways, especially because none of my Seattle friends are going to be home for significant periods of time.

Yes, I'll be sad to leave London, and there's so much more I wish I had time to do in the UK and Europe, but I also haven't set foot in the US for almost a year. And after living alone this semester, I'm completely ready to live in my house with people I not only love but live well with, and go running and walk my dog and sit around in coffee shops and kayak and bike and go backpacking and read and see summer blockbusters, and basically do all the things that make up an awesome Seattle summer. YAY.

OMG COMMUNITY ♥ ♥ ♥

Augh, I'm so sad this season's over and we don't get more Community til the fall! I guess I'll just have to spend the summer trying to get more of my friends into it. Sigh, what a chore.

This post is lost overdue – partially because I was traveling when Diana Wynne Jones passed away on March 26th of this year, and so didn’t find about it until much later, and even then because it was hard for me to think about it for a while. Diana Wynne Jones was, in my opinion, the best Young Adult Fantasy author – yes, there are others I have almost equal love for, especially Tamora Pierce, Patricia C. Wrede (er, pre-Mammoth Fail), and JK Rowling – but DWJ’s books had a creativity and insight about them that was utterly unique.

Neil Gaiman, who was a great friend and something of a protégé of hers, wrote a very touching and beautiful remembrance of her in his blog here. My favorite is the poem that he wrote when she dedicated a book to him, which I’d read before but never fails to be sweet. For another reader’s perspective, [personal profile] pandarus wrote a lovely tribute to her here that gets much more to the heart of DWJ’s books than I can, but it inspired me to write my own post. I wanted to share my own thoughts – because as I said in a comment on that post, so much of my favorite YA fantasy is also a generational, communal, fannish thing for me (especially my feelings about Tortall, Redwall, and Harry Potter, which was fueled as much by the way my friends and I shared them as by their intrinsic value), while my love for DWJ is, and always has been, a lot more personal.

Tales from Nowhere; or, rest in peace, Diana Wynne Jones )
Katara calls bullshit.
It occurs to me that most of the posts I've made in the past six months or so - or maybe even the past year - have been either talking about how long I've been away from fandom and how I've been avoiding, or about how lonely I feel, or about how much my work ethic has degraded, or a combination of all of the above. Not that they aren't valid things to talk about, I guess, but it feels a little repetitive even to me. So! My new resolution is to a) post without feeling guilty about how long it's been, and b) talk about other things. Including things that make me happy.

That being said, it's been a while and a lot has happened!

1. Spring break! Traveled for three weeks straight - went to Spain for a week with my friend P who's also in London with me, then met up with a couple other college friends (including Non-Fannish Flatmate from last year) in Istanbul for a few days, then went to Athens and met up with [livejournal.com profile] veverghede, My Roommate, and their other friend from Paris (who was rather delightful and helped me get the other two into Doctor Who), and spent a few days together in Crete. I'll make a proper post about travels later, possibly with pictures, but suffice to say the whole trip was fantastic.

2. I turned 22! While in Spain, actually. Not much of a milestone age, really, but it's a neat number?

3. After returning to London, my fourteen-year-old sister came to visit me here for a week! I was a little worried about what it would be like - my sister and I have a complicated relationship, and it was the first time we'd spent that much time just the two of us, without my parents. But that actually turned out to make it completely wonderful. We did all the sightseeing things in London, saw The Children's Hour (with Keira Knightley and Elisabeth Moss!), went to the Doctor Who exhibit, watched tons of geeky tv, and had a lot of really open, thoughtful discussions, the kind that we don't usually have because we bicker too much or don't take each other seriously enough. It was amazing, I think for both of us.

4. Fannish projects: working on a Lancelot-centric OT5 fic for [personal profile] scribe, a super-secret vid project with [personal profile] scribe, and *deep breath* a Merlin Big Bang. This is my first time properly committing to a Big Bang challenge, not to mention attempting to write something over 30,000 words at all! Nervous, but excited.

5. TV: Castle remains my happy place, I'm finding Glee strangely addictive though often uncomfortable, Doctor Who is fun but hasn't really grabbed hold of me yet this season, and Community remains the BEST THING EVER, surprise surprise! Also watched all of The Good Wife so far - yes, everyone on the Internet who's been raving about it, you were absolutely right about how fantastic it is.

Okay, summarizing post over, off to try to catch up on my flist. And: COMMUNITY SEASON FINALE TONIGHT. ♥

off!

young photogenic artists of love!
Thanks so much for the kind comments and emails about my last post. I'm definitely feeling better - partly because I'm, er, leaving today for Spain? In about an hour actually? And I'll be traveling for three weeks, after Spain to Turkey and then Greece with various college friends. I am SO EXCITED. And now my money's running out on this computer so just quickly, I'll be around on email and sporadically on DW/LJ while I'm gone, but in the mean time have a great few weeks everyone!
